Presentation of the Tata Nano by Clarion
Just thought I’d post this video Clarion put together for their Distributor conference of the Tata Nano Project I did for them back in December last year. I will be returning to Penang in about one month time to paint 3 more cars for them.
All the airbrushing work I have been getting from Clarion lately hasn’t left me much time to do anything else but I have to say I love the travelling side of it as I get to see the world and meet some amazing people on the way.
As soon as I know my travel plans I will post them up so anyone who lives nearby can have the opportunity to drop by and watch me paint.

“Merry Christmas”
I have just returned from India where I painted a car for “Clarion” a car stereo company from Malaysia.
They flew me over last Wednesday and I had only 6 days to fully airbrush a Tato Nano. I took a ton of photo’s and some video footage so I will be putting that together over the next week or so and posting it on my blog for everyone to see.
I learned that not being able to speak the native language wasn’t really a handicap. When there is a passion shared for the love of creating custom vehicles it doesn’t matter where you are in the world there is no communication barrier.
I am so blessed to be able to travel to another country and be able to share my passion with like minded people.
I hope that your Christmas is spent with loved ones and is full of Joy and Happiness and I hope 2010 is your best year ever!
“MERRY CHRISTMAS”

Sema 2009 – Las Vegas!
I just returned from Las Vegas where I took part in some airbrush demo’s for the “House of Kolor” Stand at the Sema trade show which is held every year at the Las Vegas convention centre.
This was my second year at Sema and I still didn’t get to see all the stuff there. It’s 2 million square feet under roof and I was told if you line the stalls end to end they would span out to 45 km. Definately worth a visit at least once in your lifetime.
What was really great to see was all the custom painting. It certainly still is a growing trend and to see the quality of work on some of the cars it didn’t appear the economic downturn has affected this industry much at all.
There were also quite a few artists demonstrating their work and were eager to chat and share some of their knowledge. I was fortunate enough to meet Rich Evans, Corey Saint Clair, OG Abel, Craig Fraser, Mike Levallee just to name a few! See pics below.

Airbrush skulls made easy
In this step by step I am going to show you a really simple way to paint a skull using the shield “Skull Mania 3″
To start with I have used a piece of masking tape to hold my shield into position.
In this step I have used white tint to paint around the the entire edges of the sheild.
Simply paint on the edge of the shield and allow the overspray to drift onto the surface.
You will get the best effect by using a shield this way. Most people believe you should paint in the entire area, when in fact they are not designed for this purpose.
I want to create the effect of fire burning in the background so I used the outside section of the Skull Mania 3 shield which is specially designed to paint real fire.
You will notice in the picture that I have added some flames inside the cavities.
A very simple way to paint real fire is to use a shield which is designed with the correct curves such as the shield “Skull Mania 3″.
The beauty of the “Skull Mania 3″ shield is that it is a two piece shield. The inside section is the skull and the outside section has the curves for painting real fire.
Painting real fire is a simple technique that can be learned by anyone. However it takes a bit of practice to get it to flow and therefore look realistic.
Start by painting around the edge of the shield allowing the overspray to drift onto the surface.
Then to create the effect of a hot spot,
begin by painting on the shield and move your airbrush in the direction the fire would be burning. Bring your airbrush away from the surface as you go to create a very soft blend.
In this step I have flipped my shield over and painted the other side of the flame.
Here you can clearly see the direction of the flames, it is important to keep them flowing in the same direction.
To add some movement I have painted in some soft strokes without the use of the shield.
You will notice that I have painted them in the same direction I want the flame to appear to be burning.
Add some more flames using the curves on the shield and overlap some of them to add depth.
It’s important not to over do it with the flames and the trick to making it look realistic is to paint the flames randomly. If it’s too even it doesn’t look as effective.
In his step I have flipped my shield over to paint in the teeth and gumline.
The beauty of this shield is that the outer edge is exactly the same on the otherside (so you wont have any problems lining it up.)
Also the teeth are on one side and the gumline is on the other side which line up with each other perfectly when flipped over.
Here I have filled in the top of the head section so it joins up with the rest of it.
For this demonstration I have decided not to use the crack in the skull just to demonstrate how it can be done without it.
Now that the teeth and gumline have been added in, it’s time to add a bit more detail.
I have simply added a few soft blends without the shield for the eyebrows, top of the head, cheekbones and chin areas.
These are the areas where the light would be reflecting.
At this point you can see our skull looks pretty damn cool… You can can either leave it as it is or add some more detail to make it really pop.
You can get the Skull Mania 3 shield from the following website www.airbrushingmadeeasy.com
Have fun!

airbrushes that I use
My all time favourite airbrush gun is the Iwata HP-C gravity feed. I’ve had some of my Iwata HPC’s for over 15 years. I may have changed the needle and tip a couple of times over the years but they still go hard. I do 90% of my work with these. They are a great all round work horse and I use them for laying down color and for applying all my detail. They may seem to be expensive for some but when you look at the longevity of it you really are getting value for money. Just one of my guns has probably made me well over $100,000 dollars over it’s lifetime.
When I am laying down any pearls or metallics I use the Iwata Revolution HP-CR. They are great for putting down thicker paint. Sometimes I use this gun for small spot repairs, for example on a bike frame where I don’t want to get much over spray. I’ve used everything through this airbrush from the primer to the base coat and top coat clear. Just be aware to reduce out your primers and clears so they don’t go on too dry. And ALWAYS immediately clean the gun out after each use.
I also own a bunch of suction feed airbrush guns but I rarely ever use them. I’m just so used to using the gravity feed guns which I prefer to use.
If your just starting out a suction feed gun is a good way to start. A good value, great all round one to get would be the Iwata HP-BCS. It’s a 0.5mm so you can also spray thicker fluids through it.
